We were at the Celtics game the other night, and in the spirit of actually watching the sporting event, I had no electronic devices of any kind near my ears and eyes. Cause that’s a great way to watch a game.
And since I didn’t have a camera, I decided to challenge myself to cleverly depict all the conversations and analyze all the action around me graphically. Here goes:
If you don’t recognize them, this were the YEAH, YEAH, YEAH’s, a lively group twenty-something ladies. And yes, that was pretty much the extent of their conversation, except for the line:
“It’s too bad she can’t have a baby shower because she’s Jewish”.
Which lead me to say WHAT? A search of my best friend GOOGLE later that night answered my question, and indeed, those that practice Orthodox or conservative Judaism generally do not have baby showers, as it’s considered bad luck. Who knew?
Blackberry Men. They were super quiet the entire game and intent on their tiny little screens. Are you trying to find little tiny girlfriends on those devices? Why pay money for club seats boys?
Finally, the people I had the most in common with:
Two little boys and their parents in team attire, cheering and yelling DEFENSE! Way to go people for not bringing Game Boys for the kids, and actually getting them into the game.
And let’s remember the good old days of technology:
P.S. We won the game, BTW.

I remember the good ole days!
Go Celtics!
As great as all this technology is, it really makes it hard to just be present and in the moment, doesn’t it?
Never mind the phone you can drag into the other room, so Mom can’t totally hear the conversation with your boyfriend….our first one was attached to the wall!
When I was pregnant with my first, my Jewish next-door neighbor begged me to let her have a baby shower for me, since she would never be able to have one for her own daughter. She had so much fun, inviting the neighbors and my co-workers and picking out gifts for me.
Can you imagine my house when the Celts play the Magic?
Wow, you learn something new every day. Thanks!
And technology is a fickle mistress I must say. She draws you in with all her fancy gizmos to make life so much easier and then, just when you get comfortable, she gets in a b*tch fight with Mother Board and then it’s off to the Geek hospital, leaving you alone with a Commodore 64 that will only dial up AOL.
I can’t yet pass “phone” to everyone’s satisfaction let alone my own. I stumble over simple steps like deleting etc. I could never own a “blackberry” or a “raspberry” or a “gooseberry” or whatever these devices are called. What is wrong with us? Why do we have to be in constant communication with whom/what ever? What happened to the adage “silence is golden?” No wonder bowls of valium need passing to keep the constant chatter at bay. Let’s have a moment of silence for that old friend “quiet.” He was always there when you needed him and didn’t he help you think straight and take deep breaths…..Oh, I long for his company. I think I’ll go find him right now……and have a moment alone.
