The goal of Songs for Soldiers is to give a new MP3 player to every single active duty service member in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each player will be pre-loaded with songs from a variety of artists who have donated their music to this effort.
Find out how you can help the USO send an MP3 to a soldier overseas!
From Amazon:
"Skeeter Phelan is just home from college in 1962, and, anxious to become a writer, is advised to hone her chops by writing about what disturbs you. The budding social activist begins to collect the stories of the black women on whom the country club sets relies and mistrusts ..the book Skeeter puts together based on their stories is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community, while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams."
I loved this book, and the author Kathryn Stockett was especially adept at capturing the dialect of the maids.
5 stars in my book!
Reading in Hardcover
"To Kill a Mockingbird follows three years in the life of 8-year-old Scout Finch, her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus - three years punctuated by the arrest and eventual trial of a young black man accused of raping a white woman. Though her story explores big themes, Harper Lee chooses to tell it through the eyes of a child. The result is a tough and tender novel of race, class, justice, and the pain of growing up."
I can't believe I was never assigned this book somewhere along the line, but it seemed a good choice after reading the Help.
Look Mom! It’s a priest for Jewish people!
— Little nephew Matt, who saw an Amish guy in the airport. He’s a most observant child.
Very clever!! I’m flying from Denver to Baltimore tomorrow and glad the Blizzard didn’t hit 2 days later!
I feel your pain! I do not like snow. Our old neighborhood back in MD just got 21 inches. INCHES! 21 of them! Ugh. Don’t miss it one little bit.
I’m banning the ever popular “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” for the remainder of the holiday season since we’ve been slammed with almost 2 feet, yes, I say, 2 feet of snow which fell on Cape of Cod (where, BTW, snow is supposed to be infrequent due to the fact that we are on the ocean and snow doesn’t last – unless it falls on Dec. 19 – 20 and the temps are below 20 in which case it will probably stay until March since the drifts are up to my 5′6″ shoulders. Your poem brings a sense of holidays gone haywire (which often happens) and what we “love” about them….the sense that everything is beyond our control….and so we cope with whatever aids we have….candy, cookies, cakes, cocktails!!! Welcome Home and Merry, Merry!!!
I personally love a white Christmas! Ah Mom – note to self – I do not think you are 5′6″ anymore – just saying!
I also love NE because we have “freakish” weather which nobody can predict! Remember the Blizzard of 78? Come on how much fun was that??? Treking 2 miles for some powdered milk? YUK BTW! I had the “never agains” after that experience!
Glad the liquor and wine was flowing! Always laugh – it’s the best medicine! (after you swear your head off!)
YAY! Jet Blue just got my Cape Cod Kid down here!
That white stuff? That’s why I DON’T live on the Cape anymore.
