Well, now that the sun sets so romantically at 4:30 every day, do you find it’s a struggle to maintain your sanity? Can you adjust to the sheer darkness with ease and grace? Do you already feel like lack of Vitamin D compelling you to pull the covers over you head?
Oh yes, the pitfalls of Daylight Savings Time and the change of seasons.
One week we have this:

And the next we have this.

So instead of moping, I commiserate with my favorite comedian, Lewis Black. Lewis does a great commentary on fall, which those of us in the Northeast know to be totally 100% factual. Because fall, as he says, is a bunch of leaves, and then you have sticks. As depicted above. One week your yard is like a jewel toned glory of nature, the next it’s looks like the devil’s bony hand reaching skyward. (At least that’s what I think my trees look like now. ) Have yourself a laugh and listen to Lewis’ rant about fall, you won’t feel alone. (CAUTION: He does like salty language for those easily offended. But then again I took my parents to see him and they were cool with his act.)
OK, let’s stay with the positive trends here. How about test driving some holiday recipes? I whipped up these savory treats over the weekend, thinking they might be good for Thanksgiving appetizers:

Yes, these Gruyere/Walnut Cheese Crisps hit the spot. Think adult Cheez-It. I imagine you could substitute any kind of cheese and nuts to this recipe and change it up. So give these a whirl, and plop yourself down with a glass of wine and an episode of Auntie Oprah, and enjoy as darkness descends at the magical hour of 4:30 pm.
And, do indeed fling yourself headfirst into fall. There is no other way to do it.

I linked over here from Bossy’s, I love yours too! And I REALLY want to make these Gruyere Walnut crisps but the link faile for me. Is there any chance you’d be willing to email the recipe directly or perhaps direct me to your original source of it? I didn’t find it on Google or in the Epicurious library.
Thank you, they look so fabulous!
Lalala la la, Bossy can’t hear you. In her own mind it’s still summer.
The cheese crisps look great and what’s not to love about grown-up cheese-its? I’m going to make them for our next cocktail party.
Besides all the glorious other things I like better than living in Cold-dark-achusetts is that here in the Sunshine State it doesn’t get dark until 5:45pm.
I used to light a candle and make a pot of tea every day at 4pm. Now, the only time I drink tea is when the temperature goes below 60 degrees.
I can see I’ll be posting more food and candlelit vignettes as the weather progresses! GO LMSS on not having to brew hot beverages anymore!
OOOO Meg, will you be bringing these delicious adult “Cheeze its” to stamping this week! They look fabulous!!!
I will see what I can whip up! They really are good!
